D&D : A King's Share

Original email date 8/26/2013

High atop Nargothil, Afton calls on the spirits to aid her companions. Her prayers are heard and the adventurers shift into mighty eagles and take flight to leave this place.

As they circle above Nargothil they spy an enormous black dragon take flight across the vale toward the south east face of the mountain. His Scales are an onyx black but barely glisten with a deep red in the morning sunlight. His wingspread the length of two warships and his maw large enough to swallow a mammoth. He returns to his lair, and from atop the cave he lets a mighty roar and then blasts at the air a cloud of super heated flame that melts the snow around and sends a few goblins reeling off the mountain.. their bodies incinerated before falling.

Our adventurers can fly in any direction.. to the east lies Valla which they could reach.. the far south, the edge of the greenwood. The west, they have not yet explored :)

D&D Session Notes: Guardian of the North Gate

Original Email Date 3/25/2013

Our party sleeps through the night keeping watches on the camp fires of ‘presumably’ orcs and goblins below. As dawn breaks they are glad for the sun, as the night without fire was cold and they had to sleep against Afton as a bear to keep warm.

After everyone eats rations that morning, Afton assumes the form of a large raven and takes to flight around the vale. She notices many camps of goblins near the northern ends, and as she comes closer to the south, comes up on a host of some humans. Some of the humans are in cages, and others wander free with weapons, side by side with some other beings, larger and stronger than orcs but apparently unhindered by daylight. Half orcs.

She flies around the gate houses, seeing smashed gates but there are goblin guards on the walls of the south and west gates and crude barricades. She then spots a huge cavern high up in the mountainside. There are many carcasses about the cave entrance, and she and the other ravens are shooed away by the buffet of a dragon’s wings. A wyvern, like the one that attacked them before comes to land here.

As she returns to the northern side, she notices that the gate here is unguarded, but for a small goblin camp in the ravine under what was once perhaps a drawbridge. She watches and realizes that the chief sends 3 of his goblins off to gather food.

The party stealthily makes their way from high ground between the large glacial boulders that have come to rest here. Till eventually reaching the ravine. The plan, Afton stands watch above and the rest of the party moves around to enter the pass and attack from the rear of a tent.

Val becomes invisible and makes windy sounds, while his more physical companions charge into the largest tent and unleash and onslaught. In a few seconds more than a dozen goblins lay massacred at the hands of the 3 warriors. Even as 7 more come to the tent to see the commotion, they are felled and cut down as they turn to run. Afton signals the return of the ‘food run’ goblins, who return dragging a humanoid leg.

The party awaits for them in the main tent, and the goblins lives are ended abruptly.

Jade goes about the process of searching for anything of worth, and does find a buried box under the leader’s sleeping area. It contains several copper coins.

Afton regroups with the party below.

Seeing that the former bridge is no longer there, the party opts to attempt to climb the massive former drawbridge chains from the canyon below. Each chain link is impossibly large, larger than a man. As such, it is difficult to get footing for the small elves, however the barbarian manages to scamper up with a rope. At the top he can see a gate and a few skeletons outside, peering inside he sees another open gate across a bridge and a large empty chamber. Also filled with skeletons in varying states of decay.. a large gray giant figure appears slumped against the far gate.

Shontu then ties off a rope to the chain and lowers it for the rest of the party to climb up with. Val gives the climb his best effort, but it does result in a deal of mishap and injury to himself and Shontu as he is finally able to crest the top. The rogues manage without great event and Afton transforms into a venomous snake and scales the chains.

Once above, the rogues peak inside to recon the bridge. They see the room was defensive, with a pit with no bottom in sight and access from the gate wall and walls and balconies all around to rain arrows on would be attackers. The Bridge is littered with the dead, the large dead thing is at least troll-sized, and he has two massive flails at either side of his lifeless hands. His eyes have been sewn shut. The rogues find this odd.

Jade takes up position on the back wall, behind where the gray thing has its back propped to the open gate. Tara returns to the party, informing them that it appears clear but there are dead everywhere.

The party enters the room cautiously. Everything appears fine, this place is quiet.

The party proceeds onto the bridge.. as they continue about half way onto the bridge they hear a massive groaning creak from behind them. The light from the crack of the door narrows leaving only the light from over the wall behind.. and then ‘BOOM’ as the gates close behind them.

The gray lifeless hulk reaches and grasps his flails..moving to his feet he orders his minions ‘RISE’.

Skeletons around the room come to life immediately attacking the party with whatever they have.

For a moment things look very good for the party, they are able to smash the skeletons with ease, and Afton, as a snake has avoided their interest. Afton slithers off to one side, becomes human again and then taps her cudgel to the ground.. plants spring up and the ground becomes blessed by the druid. Instantly, most of the skeletons fall apart and fall back to the ground.

As if in response, the Deathbringer lets out a roar.. and darkness washes over everything in a wave.. healing skeletons and harming the living.

He then charges at Shontu.

Shontu in a full rage, engages this creature with all his might. But even shontu’s wrath seems to diminish in the wake of the Deathbringer. Val summons an Archon from beyond.. a mighty dogheaded warrior to fight for him. His warrior is unable to best this foe.

The rogues move in to stab at it, but the massive undead being seems to shrug off wounds that would injure or kill a normal being. Many of their ‘misses’ simply are stabs landed that would otherwise be fatal but ‘chuck’ into the flesh without any seeming effect.

Val’s minion and the rogues sweep up the last of the skeletons as Val attempts to cripple the creature.. his powers of necromancy seem to hold no sway over the creature.

The beast lets out another shockwave as everyone puts everything they have into it.. each party member landing at least one blow, and val firing magic missiles. The Death bringer raises his flails one last time and begins to rush in to force the party off the bridge, when Afton reaches out and imbues it with her healing magic. The deathbringer has been bested.

D&D Notes Part 2 : Cast Out

Original email date 3/11/2013

After a satisfying murder, our adventurers decide that sleep would be a good thing and they take a nice long nap in their room.

Morning arrives to the sound of knocking on the door. The king’s cousin is there and there are many guards that appear displeased. They carry shackles although they agree not to shackle the party if they will go along.

They are taken to a pit dungeon and made to stay there till mid day.

Eventually they are removed and brought to the hall before a grieving king. Val tries valiantly to interrupt the king to prove the party’s innocence but this does not seem to work in their favor. No one else can seem to understand what is being said.

Eventually the council casts stones to vote. 2 members find them not guilty, the old man and the dwarf. When asked for the manner in which they choose to die, Val requests that they be set free to go to Nargothil.

This is refused and the council agree that the best method would be to bury them to their necks and then trample their heads with horses.

Guards begin to wrestle shontu to the ground who is now struggling and realizes this situation must be bad as val tells them they are going to die. Quickly, val casts one last spell.. and dispels the magic placed upon the king.

As if stepping out of a haze, he wonders if he has misjudged the party. His friend, the eldest council member confesses to being involved in the plot and explains his reasons.

Still angry the king grants them their lives but declares them banished from Valla.

The party gather their things and manage to visit the forge where their armor was repaired. Here the payment was left them in the form of a large red gem.

Leaving Valla, the adventurers decide to travel upriver. They travel a distance till they encounter one of the tributary streams feeding this river. Remembering that the secret pass was part of a cave stream, and that the river must be running out soon from the map, Val chances that this will get them close.

So the party turns and follows the stream for many days. One night they are interrupted in their sleep by a huge wild man (yeti) which crashes into the tent but is soon overcome by our heroes’ martial prowess.

Later that night, the dire wolves feast on Yeti entrails a short distance from the camp.

Within another day, the party arrives high up the mountainside at a cave from which the spring flows. Entering the cave, they notice a primitive painting on one wall but think little of it.

A short ways in, they are stopped in the dark by multiple figures holding torches and spears. They seem to want the party to leave. Val cast tongues again and begins speaking to them with a strange clicking tongue. He learns that these people are afraid of them and that they have seen hardship. This is their home and they want them to leave.

Val agrees but explains that they are powerful and are fated to pass through here. The party can see them better now as large brutish looking men (neanderthals). The shaman sees them and takes them to the back of a cave where they can see dwarven carvings of men and dwarves, some of which look like the party (given their equipment). He explains this must be the passage they refer to.

To show thanks, afton asks to bless them and is taken to a beautiful pair of caves with open skylights covered in ferns and forest growth. She makes the ground holy and the people sense this and are thankful.

The party leaves their strange slope browed friends and continue down the dwarven pass.. a more proper tunnel now. Eventually coming out in the dark of night. The tunnel high up, is concealed by rocks as well as a small stair case nearbye.

Behold the Vale of Nargothil.

From here they can see the backside of the mountain, and the stone remnants where once a bridge stood to the rear gates. Much of the valley below is lit with fires, no doubt cooking men or building weapons of war. They decide to make camp under the cover of the hidden cave for the night and plan their entry tomorrow.

D&D Notes : Part 1 The Kill

Original Email 3/11/2013

Our session begins with the party having been given lodging inside the Fortress of Valla. They investigate their quarters which are very nice and find a nice fire with an iron pot and some straw bedding.

They are summoned to dine in the king’s hall that night and Shontu enjoys some of the best barbecue he has ever had. The leg of whatever it is is very tasty and weighs nearly as much as him!.
The rest of the party go about trying to learn more about these people.

Val uses his magic to speak their language and learns from the dwarf there that there is rumored to be a secret pass by which the surviving dwarves escaped the massacre at Nargothil 500 years earlier. He also casts his tongues on a few other party members to assist them as well.

The eldest council member meets briefly with Tara to explain to her that the king is under a spell cast by Mahdrea and that she is up to no good. He offers her payment if she will do away with their ‘problem’ but warns that they must leave town afterward.

Meanwhile as the party continues, perhaps due to strong drink, Val gets up the nerve to confront the king about his Dark Elf companion. The king is of course defensive as one would be under a charm spell and they are warned it would be best to keep that opinion to themselves.

Sometime later, our adventurers retire to their quarters where Tara explains the situation with the king. The party agrees that killing mahdrea for profit will be quite satisfying and they go about the task of attempting to locate her.

Returning to the feast, they manage to discern that the king and Mahdrea have retired upstairs to his quarters. Our adventurers then walk around the great hall to discover a balcony on the second floor. Val decides on creating a distraction with some smoke and sound and the more stealthy members of the party manage to clambor up the wall (with one mishap) to the balcony above.

Meanwhile party goers are attempting to recruit Val to assist with the ‘emergency’ and so he feigns passing out and falls over in the mud. Afton more gracefully removes herself by shifting into a Raven and flies up to the balcony to observe her friends.

Fortunately for our party, Jade is an expert lockpick and manages to open one of the two doors on the balcony. However this first door appears to have been a treasure room, and for whatever reason the party is more motivated by blood than gems.

Opening the second door reveals a bed chamber where the king and the dark elf wizard lay sleeping. Alone, tara slips into the room, short sword drawn. She watches her arch enemy for several seconds and just when she exhales, Tara grabs her hair and plunges the sword into the side of her neck.

Blood sprays up as Tara slides her gushing body away from the bed so as not to rouse the king. The kill is quick and silent.

Sensing the deed as done, the group moves quickly to return to their quarters. Tara now covered in blood. A guard begins to walk across their path and thinking quickly, Afton flies into his face flapping and scratching so as to obscure his view. The bloody Tara makes it to their room unseen.

D&D Notes Part 2 Bridge to Valla

Orginally Emailed 3/4/2013

Following the incident with the goblins, the party manages to travel another day without significant event. The second day, they spot what appears at first to be another lake monster but then a sail clearly unfolds atop it. The druid transforms into an arctic bird and flies overhead to get a closer look.

Upon returning she informs the party that the boat is manned by several large men. The party quickly goes about the process of building a fire and tosses damp moss on it to generate smoke.

The boat does change course and approaches the shore. The men who step off are very large and appear to be exceptionally well equipped. Sporting large bear coats and some of the most elaborate and well crafted armor and weapons that the party has ever seen.

When the leader speaks, no one can understand him. It seems that these people have not been exposed or do not know the common tongue of men in the south. Val casts a spell so that he may speak any tongue. The men identify themselves as Valnir, and they are returning from a raid. They hear the party’s story and of their quest, but are reluctant to help although they do agree to take them to their leader.

They are also somewhat reluctant but accommodating of Afton’s cat.

Of course once the party board their vessel, they are each handed an oar to work.

After 2 days of travel on the enormous lake, they come to the mouth of a river marked by a large statue of a bear. Further into the mouth of the river they land and tie the longship off to a carved post and find themselves in a hidden, fortified camp.

That night they meet and converse with a dwarf who exlaims that the treasures of Nargothil belong to his people although he’s never heard of the sword they are seeking.

The following day they depart upriver again and travel for 2 more days. The lands are very boreal and the forests and mountains are beautiful, there are patrols and habitations of humans here, though none dressed so well as the men on the longship.

At last they come to a dock, the party notices many other longships simply lined up on the shores of the river away from the docks and others being built. before them is a massive stair. The stair moves up a large hillside through several walls and gates, inside each is a community of humans, some dwarven homes as well. Till at last the stairs come to a valley that drops and forms a massive bridge which arcs to the lowest peak of the mountains behind.. atop which sits a sturdy stone fortress. The party has arrived at Valla.

The party is taken to the great hall of Valla, a man summons the king and an audience is given as the Valnir said they would. The king hears the same story and is also skeptical and reluctant. But then Maehdra enters the room, apparently having already introduced herself to the king’s court. Our adventurers are immediately uneasy, but Maehdra then vouches for the party, insisting that they are capable dragon slayers and heroes. She suggests that they might be successful in recovering the scroll of belphegor from either the succubus Xinxi or Gruumesh and return it back to Valla so that she can properly destroy it.

Given the import, the king agrees to outfit the party with any supplies they might require and have his men drop them off as close to the pass of Nargothil as possible.

D&D Notes 3/1 Part 1 Shores of Mordune

Original Notes posted 3/4/2013

Ok notes! I plan on checking experience again before next session as you guys have done alot although I’m not sure I’m ready for you to be level 10!

After having incinerated several goblins in the middle of night on the shores of lake Mordune, the party slept uneasily knowing that a few had managed to escape and that the barge full of orcs had no doubt seen the flames from the lake.

Shontu arrived early around the campfire with a pair of arctic hares for breakfast. By the time the party had finished, the snow was so heavy that it was nearing blizzard conditions. The wild elves seemed more accustomed to these conditions but the rest of the party began to succumb to the extreme cold. Frequent stops were necessary with fire to keep them going.

Val soon found it necessary to make a pair of mittens from the morning’s breakfast kill. Afton looks up and decides that in a day this should let up and the temperatures will rise.

The evening passes uneventfully and the party is able to restore themselves with a nice warm fire.

The next day seems clearer and the party continues their travel eastward around the lake. There is a mixture of snow, spring ferns and old leaves on the ground and the most of the party, save afton does not notice the disembodied, snow covered head which has been strapped to a tree.

As Afton alerts the party, they become more aware of their surroundings and begin to spread out. Shontu, investigating a low lying area finds himself victim of a natural and improvised pitfall which was covered with branches and concealed by leaves and snow. The crevasse appeared to be a natural washout from a spring but the sharpened stakes at the bottom proved it to be an intentional trap.

As the two rogues moved in to secure a rope and lower it for the barbarian, the ever alert Afton now notices that they are in fact being surrounded by goblin hunters. Thinking quickly.. sort of, Afton casts a pillar of flame on the group closest to her. The goblin archers return fire.

As the rogues had their backs to the situation, tending the hole and being in the low point they are struck with a few arrows but not seriously hurt. Shontu meanwhile has no idea that a rope has been lowered and has gone to investigate the other end of the crevasse which appears to have been walled off with wooden posts.

Meanwhile Afton enlarges her cat and sends it after goblins approaching with their swords drawn. Val facing the opposite side, summons a massive wall of flame that incinerates the majority of the goblins as the two rogues charge uphill at a few still loosing arrows near them. The rogues quickly fell them and the remaining goblins which turn to run.

Shontu has crawled back out of the hole and sees fire and death and then crawls back down. Moves toward the wall, axe in hand and proceeds to chop it down. He is joined by the rogues on the other side who then continue further south over the next rise and are overpowered by the stench of a goblin village being abandoned by the last few remaining goblins.

Afton manages to summon a small downpour and at least put out some of the trees which are now burning. Hopefully the dampness will manage to stop the spread of the other trees which also have some limbs burning as well.

The good news is that the goblins had dry firewood and kindling of which, the party is now out of. This will last them a few more days.

Hdathem Pre Session Notes

“The market past the docks on Hdathem is very impressive and it is difficult to resist the urge to spend! The rogues discover that there seem to be no apparent ‘buyers’ waiting here for them. A few individuals take interest in the statue but no serious offers. Most only offer a few gold.

After asking around, the party has located a suitable tavern in the dense city of Hdathem. ‘The Badger’s Den’! The Den has pretty much everything an adventurer could need. Discretion, private booths, assortment of alcohol and hookahs, gambling, entertainment and rooms.

The party will need to pay 1 gold per night for a small room, which Val does put down the coin for at least one room. Meanwhile the rogues come back downstairs to checkout the local personalities in the tavern, the innkeeper indicates to them that there is someone there who said they wanted to talk to them about a statue…

Upstairs, Val goes about the process of tallying up the gear and figuring out what is what in the privacy of the room. As his portable hole is deployed, to the shock and horror of everyone.. it doesn’t open.

It appears to simply be a wide 6 foot section of cloth with two noticeable tears in the center."

“After killing and chasing off the dark elves, the party decides to get some sleep. Monkeys awake the party in the middle of the night, to get some quiet Shontu climbs a tree and tosses a monkey onto the fire. Monkeys leave.

At dawn, party has monkey barbecue. Party heads down the tunnel. Shontu leads. Shontu realizes monkey barbecue disagrees with him and comes running back up stairs. Haldir sees this and follows. Later Haldir wishes he hadn’t.

Shontu rejoins the party and they continue their descent. Carvings on the wall indicate this place was made by people. :) Party continues down one tunnel, find rooms with dead dark elves and a few dead humans. Jade decides to loot a corpse and trips a snare. A net grabs her and hurls her up out of the room through a collapsed hole in the roof to the trees in the jungle above. Fortunately jade is able to escape as the rope has rotted and tears, sending her falling back from the tree tops down into the hole and the dungeon below. Jade says ‘its allright.. i’m ok’.

Party continues and finds another big room with beds and tables and dead elves and a couple of dead people. ‘What just grabbed my leg!’ Jade and Haldir are both grabbed by 2 human corpses.

Haldir cries and runs back out of the dungeon. The rest of the party manages to kill what appear to be 2 zombies.. Jade complains that the one grabbing her did something and her leg hurts. Jade has an icky worm in her leg. Afton zaps it with staff and Jade is happy.

Meanwhile Val is very concerned for Haldir. Val and the others run back to find him. Party finds more dark elves instead! They give Val some free masterwork arrows. Shontu charges. The rogues catchup and they begin cutting down the archers.

Behind archers, the barbarian and rogues can see Haldir being tied up. There is also some type of evil bitch there too. As her minions fall she begins to make good her escape with Haldir. Afton won’t have it and tree roots reach into the room and begin grabbing everyone.

Bitch turns to gaseous bitch form and floats away. Now party and two elves are all trapped in tree roots. Afton is sad. Worm is eating haldir’s brain. Haldir is scared and dumb now.

Afton can’t reach Haldir to cure his dumb. Afton ‘wakes’ a tree through the root and the tree begins trying to push the other branches back. At last the party is free and the room collapses.

Afton cures haldir and makes him a little less dumb. Haldir is happy and less dumb. Party goes back to investigate other room. Jade disarms a trap by jamming something in it and then opens a chest. Jade finds a nice black leather tunic inside.

Party gets out of the hole and decides to look for other entrances. They find a few.

Rest for the night, get up.. Haldir is purple now and less wise. Afton cures him again. Haldir is a healthy blue again and no less wise. Party goes down first hole. Shontu in front. Shontu discovers that Honey Badgers are mean and they just don’t care.

Party decides to try another hole. Party enters large chamber its pretty with plants and stuff and big statues of prehistoric celebrities. Slimey skeleton attacks party.

It paralyzes Afton with its tongue. EWWW. Val casts ray of enfeeblement. Skeleton hits like a noodley armed choir boy and party beats it down. Giant centipede begins to consider making a meal of Afton as the party begins to search for loot.

Party finds loot, someone squishes centipede getting some juice on Afton. Afton is displeased.

The loot is cool and there is much rejoicing. Val takes the crown from a dead kings head because Val wears jewelry and stuff. It also makes him look cool, everyone agrees.
Haldir sees his shiny mail and begins stripping the corpse. Party gets lots of cool weapons and look pretty nice now, the king’s body is discarded."
